Ella earned her orange belt this week. She is still loving karate.

Dessert plates prepared and lined up by Lucy and Claire. I love all the whisks, spatulas, and wooden spoons as eating utensils.

Claire practices her writing… in a Cinderella dress. Notice the tiara lying on the table.

Following in Claire's footsteps.

I love how the relationship between these two is really starting to blossom. Lucy has been saying Mommy, Daddy, and Ella for months, but it's only been recently that she's finally started saying "Cyaire." Since it took so long for her to learn Claire's name, it is extra sweet to hear her say it all the time now. And it's also extra sweet to see them playing and laughing together so much. One of their favorite silly things to do together is to stand on the couch, hold onto each other, fall straight down into the couch cushions, and laugh their heads off. Sometimes I postpone Lucy's nap after lunch because I just can't bear to interrupt their playtime.

I was the mystery reader in Ella's class on Dr. Suess's birthday (March 2nd), so of course I had to read The Lorax since the movie came out on the very same day.

Meet Ben (not Benjamin!), the blue betta fish. Ella wrote a persuasive letter a couple of weeks ago asking for a goldfish, and this week she came home with her "official" persuasive letter from school (it even came in a formal envelope addressed to "Mom and Dad" complete with our home address). That letter included such gems as "I think they are cute" and "please consider getting one for me," which pushed Matt and I over the edge. We finally agreed that on Saturday we would take her to buy a fish. To say she was excited would be an understatement. She could hardly sleep. She came off the bus wearing a goldfish hat that she had created during indoor recess on a rainy day. She was psyched.

Saturday found us heading out to get Ella her very first pet. The agreement was that she would use her own money to buy the fish and Matt and I would purchase the rest. There was a bit of a breakdown when the PetSmart employee informed us that a single goldfish would need at least a 5 gallon tank with a filter because goldfish produce so much waste. That was not a commitment Matt and I were quite ready to make. Ella had her heart set on a goldfish and so a few tears were shed, but she eventually pulled herself together and agreed to a betta fish. I tried to point her towards betta fish that were orange like a goldfish, but she surprised us by deciding on a blue one. She handed over her $5 bill from the tooth fairy at the cash register, and $3.99 later ($4.24 with tax), Ben was all hers!

When I was about Ella’s age I had a betta fish named Gus. I loved coming home from school to see him!

Jennifer, I have to say it again: I SO like your everyday stories plus your beautiful, special pictures. You capture really great shots! Thanks for showing.
And my first pet was also a little fish… 🙂 I´m happy for Ella. And the pics of Claire and Lucy are so adorable.

Awww, so glad Ella got her fish. One of my very first pets were two goldfish, Sassafrass and Zebediah. I’ve since moved up to four legged critters, but they still hold a special place in my heart.

Andrew is dying for a beta (ever since I told them they were fighting fish)! Sadly, we’ve never found them here in the UK.

Love that you named the fish “Ben (not Benjamin)”. My husband’s name is Ben and he hates when people assume his name must be Benjamin. As usual, gorgeous photos!

Good choice, Ella! The blue color of the fish is just awesome!
