One snowy Saturday in December, we embarked on our annual gingerbread houses.

If you know me, or have read my blog for any length of time, you know I take my gingerbread houses pretty seriously. I always do a house of my own:

And the girls each tackle their own small house:

Ella’s house (left), Claire’s house (middle), Lucy’s house (right)

Matt’s part in all of this is to perform whatever task Claire and Lucy give him to help them achieve their vision. This year his major contribution was creating those two colorful roofs on the top left and bottom:

All the houses are gorgeous. And Matt makes pretty roofs. I had a lot of fun looking at the past years. I can’t believe you got the house through security in one piece back in 2006. Love the photos of Ella that year being carried by her uncles and sitting herself down in the pantry. 🙂 My gosh, how the girls have grown through the years. Thanks so much for sharing.

I always love seeing your gorgeous gingerbread houses!!! We used to make a gingerbread train every year when I was a kid. I really need to implement gingerbread houses into our holiday routine (not that this year has been “routine” at the holidays…). 🙂 thanks for sharing the loveliness! (Question, do you make your own gingerbread pieces, or buy them?).

My mother-in-law used to make all the gingerbread pieces from scratch (years 2006-2008), but since I’ve started doing them myself at home I just use the pieces from a pre-made kit.
I do have a recipe and template for homemade gingerbread house pieces that I may break out one of these years if I’m feeling really ambitious!

Looks like Matt missed out on quite the career as a roofer 😉 Just kidding! I love that you do this tradition, it’s so fun. I haven’t made a gingerbread house in a few years, it was a church activity once and I made one when I was a nanny. They are so fun, though, maybe next year! And… per usual, photography is stunning 🙂

Once again… beautiful! Seriously- you need to start your own magazine! What do you use for your icing? Store bought or homemade? Do you have a go-to kit? I get a little overwhelmed at all the different kits!

Homemade icing makes all the difference – just use a basic royal icing recipe. I usually just pick up the Wilton gingerbread house kits they sell at Michael’s, but really any kit will work. I buy a regular size kit for myself and one of the “mini village” kit for my girls (it comes with four small houses). I usually pick up some extras really cheap after Christmas… Valentine’s Day gingerbread houses are really cute! 🙂

Great… thanks! That was helpful. Valentine’s gingerbread houses sound fun. I never thought of that!
