    20120310 California_023

    Newport Beach, CA

The big story of this week for me was my trip to Southern California for a girls' reunion weekend with friends from college.

Did I ever tell you that I thought I would never make friends in college? I lived in the same place growing up (as opposed to Matt who moved all over the Northeast and lived in 5 different states before he graduated from high school), so for me many of the kids I went to first grade with were the same kids I graduated with. Of course, friendships changed along the way and I had to meet new people when several elementary schools merged into the junior high school, but I never really had the experience of knowing nobody and having to make friends "from scratch" until I went to college. When I didn't make friends immediately (as in, on the first day) I assumed it would never happen and basically told myself "well, at least I will have a lot of time to study." Of course within about a week I found my dear friends Mandy and Lindsey who lived with me on the same floor of Hinckley Hall, and from there my circle of friends expanded to a fabulous group of girls that I still keep up with thanks to the dual miracles of blogging and Facebook. Still, it had been almost 10 years since I had seen many of them in person so it was great to have an opportunity to catch up with them this weekend.

    20120309 Airplane

2006 was the last time I set foot on a plane without a small child in tow. I thoroughly enjoyed my six hours of doing absolutely nothing on the plane except for watching TV, drifting in and out of sleep, and browsing magazines. I even had time to get bored, which is really saying something.

    20120309 California_007

The weekend revolved mostly around food, as all good weekends rightly should. From frozen bananas and Balboa Bars on Balboa Island, to frozen yogurt at Pinkberry, to great restaurants thanks to the Zagat app and resident foodie Lindsey, we definitely ate well. We filled the time between meals with shopping, getting our nails done, visiting the beach, and staying up late catching up on life in the hotel room.

    20120310 California_019

The one thing that put a damper on the weekend was that my dear friend Mandy – the person who basically initiated the whole reunion and helped plan it – wasn't able to be there. Her baby girl Lauren was diagnosed with RSV and spent the two weeks leading up to our trip in the hospital. Thankfully Lauren is home and healthy now, and although I was fairly devastated that Mandy couldn't make it at least it gives us a good incentive to plan the next reunion sooner rather than later (New York anyone?!).

    20120308 FridaySchedule_011

This was the first time I've left all the kids with Matt overnight. I knew he was more than capable, but I still wrote out this list (all the personal information/phone numbers/addresses have been erased) for him since there was so much going on that Friday that he is not used to dealing with. At the bottom of this list I wrote: "Please remember: 1) to brush the girls' hair every day, 2) to have Ella feed her fish every day, and 3) I love you!" Clearly he went above and beyond because when I got back from my trip, our babysitter Diana told me that when she got to the house on Friday, Matt had put bows in Lucy's hair. She said, "I went home and told my mom that he is just the best dad ever!" I tend to agree.

Here are a few other non-trip related photos from the week:

    2012 Project Life, Week 3

Like many who use Project Life, I love adding insert pages to my layouts when I have extra photos to share. Although I am actually trying to be a little more selective this year when adding extra pages so that my albums aren't quite as bulky (I ended up with 3 albums for 2011!), there are some events that just call for a page of their own. Above, you can see the front of an insert I created using photos from our one and only snowstorm this winter (a far cry from last winter). Below you can see the back of the insert:

    2012Week3b

I have had a few people ask how I plan to incorporate extra photos into my digital version of Project Life. The answer is: exactly the same way! In this case, I took the digital Design G template (the same as the Design G photo pocket page I used above) and created this:

    2012Week3c

Then I took the same template, flipped it horizontally (in Photoshop you do this by going to Image -> Image Rotation -> Flip Canvas Horizontal), and created the back side of the insert:

    2012Week3d

Put together, they look like this:

    2012Week3e

When I eventually print these digital layouts into a photo book, I plan to put these insert pages directly after the main Project Life layout for the week.

Before I go, here's one more layout from Week 5 that I haven't had a chance to share yet (as always, click to enlarge):

    2012Week5

This week included a snapshot of our crazy warm winter weather, a rundown of Ella's favorite school lunches, and a discussion of my Downton Abbey obsession, among other things.

    20120301 ClaireLucy_003

    20120301 ClaireLucy_005

I love how the relationship between these two is really starting to blossom. Lucy has been saying Mommy, Daddy, and Ella for months, but it's only been recently that she's finally started saying "Cyaire." Since it took so long for her to learn Claire's name, it is extra sweet to hear her say it all the time now. And it's also extra sweet to see them playing and laughing together so much. One of their favorite silly things to do together is to stand on the couch, hold onto each other, fall straight down into the couch cushions, and laugh their heads off. Sometimes I postpone Lucy's nap after lunch because I just can't bear to interrupt their playtime.

    20120302 MysteryReader_011

I was the mystery reader in Ella's class on Dr. Suess's birthday (March 2nd), so of course I had to read The Lorax since the movie came out on the very same day.

    20120303 BenBettaFish_013

    20120303 BenBettaFish_003

Meet Ben (not Benjamin!), the blue betta fish. Ella wrote a persuasive letter a couple of weeks ago asking for a goldfish, and this week she came home with her "official" persuasive letter from school (it even came in a formal envelope addressed to "Mom and Dad" complete with our home address). That letter included such gems as "I think they are cute" and "please consider getting one for me," which pushed Matt and I over the edge. We finally agreed that on Saturday we would take her to buy a fish. To say she was excited would be an understatement. She could hardly sleep. She came off the bus wearing a goldfish hat that she had created during indoor recess on a rainy day. She was psyched.

Saturday found us heading out to get Ella her very first pet. The agreement was that she would use her own money to buy the fish and Matt and I would purchase the rest. There was a bit of a breakdown when the PetSmart employee informed us that a single goldfish would need at least a 5 gallon tank with a filter because goldfish produce so much waste. That was not a commitment Matt and I were quite ready to make. Ella had her heart set on a goldfish and so a few tears were shed, but she eventually pulled herself together and agreed to a betta fish. I tried to point her towards betta fish that were orange like a goldfish, but she surprised us by deciding on a blue one. She handed over her $5 bill from the tooth fairy at the cash register, and $3.99 later ($4.24 with tax), Ben was all hers!

2012 Project Life, Week 4 (Digital Version)

Ever since I posted about my approach to Project Life in 2012, the question I have been asked most often is how I print on my journaling cards. Do I use the cards that come in the Project Life kit or just print out the digital version of the journaling cards? How do I get the text lined up on the cards?

First of all, I do use the physical cards that come with the Clementine Core Kit to print my journaling, although you definitely could just print out the digital journaling cards on white cardstock and trim them to fit if you wanted to. What I do use the digital journaling cards for is to line up my text and get it ready to print, and I'm going to attempt to show you exactly how I do that.

A quick disclaimer: there are other similar tutorials out there that explain how to print on a Project Life journaling card. Here are a couple you might want to check out:

Paislee Press: How To Print on Journaling Cards

Listgirl: Printing Onto Project Life Journaling Cards

The only thing really unique about what I am going to show you is how I get my journaling to line up with the lined journaling cards that come with Project Life.

Step 1: Create an 8.5×11 document in Photoshop or other similar photo editing software. Within that document, create an outline the same size and shape of a Project Life journaling card. If you zoom in on the photo below, you can see that the actual dimensions I used are 2.875 inches x 3.938 inches. Instead of doing this yourself, you can save time and energy by just downloading the free template from Paislee Press.

    JournalingTutorial1

Step 2: Print out this document with the outline showing and set it aside. You will use this later when you are ready to print out your card(s).

    JournalingTutorial6

Step 3: Open up the digital copy of the journaling card you are planning to use and drag it onto your 8.5×11 document. Move it so it is lined up right inside the outline.

    JournalingTutorial2

Step 4: Create a text box and type in your journaling, obviously making sure it fits within the borders of the card. Since I already completed the journaling in my digital version of Project Life (shown at the top of this post), I just dragged the text from the digital Project Life file into my 8.5×11 document.

    JournalingTutorial3

Now, the key to getting the text to line up perfectly on the lines is to adjust your line height. To do this you need to go to your Character Menu in Photoshop (to display this menu, go to Window -> Character), shown in the photo below.  The place where you will adjust your line height is illustrated by the two letter "A"s on top of one another. I have found that if you set this to 19.4, it will match up with the spacing on *most* of the Project Life journaling cards found in the Clementine kit regardless of your text size. I imagine the spacing is similar for other Project Life editions as well, but if the spacing is different it is easy to figure this out and make adjustments on your own.

    6a00d83452a92669e20163026d716f970d-800wi

Step 5: Now that you have everything lined up and formatted the way you want, you are almost ready to print. But first, make sure you hide the layers that contain your digital journaling card and the outline you created in step 1. All that should be visible is your text, like in the photo below.

    JournalingTutorial5

Step 6: Attach your journaling card to the 8.5×11 piece of paper you printed out in step 2, fitting the card within the outline. Double sided tape would probably work best for this, but I just use a couple of rolled up pieces of regular tape and it has always worked fine.

    JournalingTutorial7

    Step 7: Print!

    JournalingTutorial8

Step 8: Carefully remove the journaling card(s) from the paper (you can reuse the 8.5×11 piece of paper again as many times as you want).

    JournalingTutorial9

And here is my physical version of Week 4, complete with printed journaling cards:

    2012Week4b

I hope this helps! Now go forth and print…

  • This week was vacation week in our neck of the woods. We usually don't have anything planned for February break, and in the past I have dreaded this particular week of the year. Not because I don't enjoy spending time with my children, but because I am one who thrives on schedules and order. But this year was different for some reason. I was craving a break. A week off from packing lunches, rushing out the door in the morning, activities, homework, and getting dressed before noon.

I ended up hardly taking any pictures this week. You would think that with everybody home I would have an abundance of photos, but instead it seems I took a vacation from my camera as well. Most of my photos this week came from the day Matt took off work and we all headed into the city. The lack of photos for the week doesn't really bother me though. I am really enjoying my week-at-a-glance approach to photo taking this year.

    20120220 PresidentsDay_007

I don't know where my kids come up with these kinds of ideas, but Ella was adamant that she needed to make a book of presidents for President's Day (which of course meant that Claire had to make one too). And that's why I found myself printing coloring pages of George Washington and gang during the 7am hour on Monday morning. I consider that a true act of patriotism.

    20120221 Pajamas_001

11:06 am on a Tuesday morning and still in pajamas? Welcome to February break. Tuesday activities included: coloring, Temple Run on the iPod, playing family in the basement, reading books, watching High School Musical 2, and a playdate with friends.

    20120222 NaturalHistoryMuseum_01320120222 NaturalHistoryMuseum_01120120222 NaturalHistoryMuseum_015

On Wednesday we drove to NYC for a visit to the Museum of Natural History. I thought my big girls would get the most out of it, but Lucy was so into all the exhibits. She even roared at all the dinosaur fossils.

    20120222 NYC

Our day in the city, Instagram style. 1 & 2: Lunch at Hale & Hearty. 3: We taste tested chocolate chip cookies at Levain Bakery & Jacques Torres. 4: Ella didn't care where the cookies came from, she approves of anything related to chocolate (as evidenced by her face). 5: Dinosaur bones. The girls' favorite part of the museum was seeing the T-Rex and getting a souvenir penny. 6: The true definition of Linsanity? The fact that I was tempted to buy this shirt even though I haven't cared about the NBA since the 1990s. Go Knicks.

    My three little Valentines.

    20120213 ClassValentines_015

These are the Valentines Ella handed out to her class…

    20120214 ValentinesDay_007

… and this is the pile of Valentines Ella got back at her class party. (Sadly, Claire's preschool doesn't do a Valentine's Day exchange. But she and Lucy got plenty of loving from Mom, Dad, and grandparents to make up for it.)

    20120216 EllaLosesTooth_001

Ella lost her very first tooth before school on Thursday morning, and her excitement was contagious! She couldn't wait to tell everybody including the older boys walking past our house while she was waiting for the school bus (bless their hearts for acting genuinely excited for her), the bus driver, her teacher, and everybody else in between. It had been very loose for days and when she went to brush her teeth this morning it just fell right out. The Tooth Fairy paid her a visit Thursday night and left $5 and a teeny tiny note under her pillow. Ella even got to keep her tooth.

    20120217 GoldfishLetter_001

Ella wrote me this letter one morning before school utilizing the persuasive writing skills she learned at school:

"Mom, can I have a gold fish I will cack[take] care of it. I will fed it. I will make sure I do not put to muck fish fod. I will give it what ever it nes[needs]. I will do what every you wot[want] me to do. Love Ella"

    20120216 NatureCenterFieldTrip_023

I was a chaperone for Ella's class trip to the Nature Center this week to learn about maple sugaring. Here Ella is tasting maple sap right out of the tree (it's about 95% water). From there we went to the Maple Sugar House to see how the sap is evaporated into pure Connecticut maple syrup. I actually found it quite fascinating. Each child in the class got their very own spile to take home… maybe you will find me tapping the maple trees in our backyard and making my own syrup one of these days?

  • 20120205 SuperBowl_011

We weren't planning to make the Super Bowl a big deal even though our team was playing. But when I printed out some Giants helmets for the girls to color in an attempt to keep them occupied on a Sunday afternoon, it led to me turning them into hats, which in turn led to huge excitement about the game, even though the girls didn't really know what they were excited about (at one point Claire put on her hat and yelled "Happy New Year!"). When it was all over the Giants managed to win the game, but we had to tell the girls the good news in the morning since we sent them to bed at halftime. We can be fun parents, but apparently not that fun.

Lucy after a nap is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get. Sometimes she wakes up singing to herself… and sometimes she wakes up like this.

    20120209 Panera_005

I have joked in the past that Panera Bread is like my second home. Whenever I have a few moments to myself (which is not often), this is usually where you'll find me. If it's around lunchtime I will grab some soup or salad, but sometimes in a weak moment I'll just come for a chocolate croissant and a few moments in a quiet booth.

    20120210 Bookmarks_005

I love that when Ella goes to the library at school on Thursdays, she always brings home an extra bookmark for Claire. These sisters are always thinking about each other.

  • Youve_Got_Mail_20923_Medium

    Friday, February 12th, 1999.

Matt and I had been dating for just a few weeks.

We were at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City, having just finished dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory (one of life's great pleasures is spaghetti with mizithra cheese and browned butter, in case you didn't know) and we were standing outside waiting to go into the movie theater to watch You've Got Mail.

Matt leaned over to me and whispered, "Happy Valentine's Day."

"Happy Valentine's Day!" I replied. And then after a brief pause, "You know it's not until Sunday, right?"

No, he did not know that Valentine's Day was always on February 14th. He thought it was like Thanksgiving, always falling on the 2nd Friday in February.

I should have known then that this was an omen for Valentine's Days to come. It is sort of a running joke in our house that Matt is notoriously bad at Valentine's Day. I think my favorite memory is finding ourselves sitting at an In 'n Out Burger one fine Valentine's evening circa 2002. But when you're so good at everything else, you can afford to be bad at this one little thing. In fact, I actually find it rather endearing.

And when you stay up hand drawing these cards for your daughters on the night before Valentine's Day, you can be forgiven pretty much anything (even giving Lucy the wrong color hair).

    20120214 ValentinesDay_005

    Happy Valentine's Day!

  • You have probably heard this story before. Way back when, I started out as a paper scrapbooker. Then when Ella was born in 2005, I discovered digital scrapbooking and swore I would never touch paper again. And then life got too busy and I stopped scrapbooking altogether.

Last year, I quietly tiptoed back into the scrapbooking world using Project Life. There was no digital option available at the time so I used the physical product and even went so far as to use my own handwriting (something I had never done before even in my paper days).

This year I thought I might type my journaling cards, but other than that I didn’t expect much else to change when it came to Project Life. But then I decided to try the new digital products and was reminded of all the things I loved about digital scrapbooking.

Thus began my minor identity crisis. Was I a paper or a digital girl at heart? I spent the first few weeks of the year creating both digital and physical pages trying to figure things out and settle on one or the other. But the answer to my question, I realized, was that I am both. And so I decided to create my pages both digitally and with the paper product in 2012. This may seem like a lot of extra time and duplicate work, but surprisingly it really isn’t. By the time I get the digital version for the week done, the majority of the work for the physical pages is already done. I mostly just have to print and slide everything into the page protectors. Project Life is all about simplicity for me, so I would never attempt this if I thought it was taking too much extra time.

I have been designing my pages in Photoshop using the Design A page template and the Clementine kit. I love doing it this way first because it allows me to see exactly which photos I need to print and what sizes I need them to be. Here is my Week 1 digital spread (click the photo to view larger):

    2012Week1f

Then I send my photos off to be printed and print out my journaling cards on my home printer and that digital spread turns into these physical pages:

    2012Week1e

As another example, here is the digital version of Week 2:

    2012Week2f

And the physical version of the same week:

    2012Week2e

My vision is to have the physical album be our family book, which I will still be able to fill with the “extras” of life (cards, school work, etc.), and then use the digital pages to create smaller photo books for each of my girls at the end of the year.

I am not sharing this with you because I think this is the best way to do things. In fact, I don’t expect this approach to work for most people. Realistically, I know that the majority of you will prefer one method over another. The last thing I want to do is make things seem more complicated since that goes against the whole spirit of Project Life in the first place. What I am hoping is that seeing Project Life used in different ways gives you a good sense of the options available and hopefully helps you figure out the best way to document your own story.
